Protecting the Fish of the Kennebec River
In September 2005, Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB)
and yours truly, Douglas Watts, launched a legal effort to require full,
state of art fish passage at the first four dams on the Kennebec River.
This effort has now resulted in the scheduling of a Public Adjudicatory
Hearing before the Maine Board of Environmental Protection, scheduled for
March 15 and 16, 2007 in Augusta, Maine. Here's a news
story.
We are requesting that the Maine water quality certifications for the
four dams require "immediate, safe and effective fish passage."
According to the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection, fish kills
of any size and severity at these four dams are completely legal and cannot
be stopped by the State of Maine without this type of language included
in the state certifications.
The Maine DEP is adamantly opposed to adding this language -- even though
it would allow the Maine DEP to enforce Maine law and stop ongoing fish
kills at the four dams.
Why does the Maine Department of Environmental Protection not want to
stop severe fish kills at dams on the Kennebec River?
